Wormwood herb (absinthe) cut
Wormwood (also known by the German name Wermut, Absinth or the scientific name Artemisia absinthium) is a plant in the daisy family. Wormwood can grow to waist height and has characteristic silver-gray leaves. Wormwood exists in many different species and is found almost worldwide. Wormwood is mostly grown in Germany, France and Italy.
Wormwood is used in various recipes and foods primarily because of its bitter taste. The herb can be prepared into a bitter-aromatic herbal tea or an aperitif, among other things. Wormwood is used to prepare spirits. The dried wormwood leaves are placed in high-proof alcohol to produce an aromatic extract. The wormwood extract is then used to make absinthe, vermouth or similar spirits and drinks. When using wormwood in the kitchen, the dried herb can be used to prepare dressings, sauces or fillings. Wormwood can intensify the taste of meat or fish and gives the dish a bitter nuance. The preparation of wormwood tea is also no longer a rarity in many households.
Use of wormwood:
To prepare a wormwood herb tea, brew half to one teaspoon of wormwood herb with about 180 ml of boiling water. The wormwood herb tea is set aside for 10 minutes and strained after stirring. The tea should be drunk warm and can be sweetened as desired.
