Lavender is grown on a large scale mainly for its essential oil. Lavender flowers were long neglected as a culinary herb, but today we are gradually rediscovering their versatility. The sight of deep purple lavender fields on the drive towards the south of France is a sign that you are approaching the warm south. Lavender, which originates from the Mediterranean region, became a popular plant in the castle gardens of the Baroque period. Today, lavender is valued for its flowers, its spiciness and its aromatic oil.

Lavender flowers have a sweet, floral and spicy scent with lemon and mint notes. The taste is similar, with camphor tones and a slightly bitter aftertaste. The lavender flowers have the highest fragrance content, but the leaves can also be used. Around the Mediterranean, lavender flowers are used in spice mixtures, among other things. In Provence, lavender is combined with savory and rosemary to make the well-known herbal mixture Herbs of Provence; in Morocco, lavender flowers are sometimes mixed into the spice mixture Ras el-Hanout.

Every year in August we personally go to Provence to see the fresh harvest and to import the most beautiful lavender flowers and lavender bouquets to Germany. In a small town in the South of France near the lavender fields, we also discovered our great soaps, which are produced in a small family business. After the harvest, we sew our colorful lavender bags and pillows from the lavender flowers.
