allspice (ground)

The spherical allspice seeds are the dried berries of the allspice tree that are harvested unripe. Allspice tastes of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. The name comes from Columbus, who thought allspice was pepper and therefore called it "pimenta" (Spanish for pepper). Allspice flavors honey and gingerbread and, in savory dishes, stews and soups. Allspice is native to the tropical islands of Central America, especially Jamaica. The best quality still comes from this island. Allspice is the only spice that still comes almost exclusively from this region. It tastes pleasantly spicy. Its name, allspice, already indicates the peppery mixture of clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and mace aroma. The strongest aroma comes from the shells, less so from the seeds they contain.

Use:

Allspice is ideal for sweet and savory soups, sauces and casseroles. Game and fish dishes, marinades, sauerbraten, meat dishes, and even pastries and sausages are made particularly delicious by adding allspice.

Origin: Honduras

Storage:

Allspice should be stored in a cool, dry and ideally airtight place to retain its intense aroma for a particularly long time.
