elderflowers rubbed
Elderflowers (also known by the German name Holunder, Holle, Fliedertee or the scientific name Sambucus nigra) are the fragrant flowers of the elder tree, which belongs to the honeysuckle family. The elder tree is a widespread plant in Europe, North America and parts of Asia.
The elderflowers are creamy white to pale yellow and have a characteristic star-shaped structure. The elderflowers grow in large clusters on the elder tree and give off a particularly sweet and floral scent. The elderberry bush can grow up to 6 meters tall.
The petals of the elderberry tree taste like honey. One of the most well-known culinary uses of elderflowers is to make elderflower syrup. The syrup can be used for drinks, desserts and other dishes. Elderflowers are also used in baking, where they are either incorporated into dough or creams.
Dried elderflowers are often brewed to make elderflower tea. This is often appreciated for its floral and sweet taste. Elderflower tea blends with other floral or herbal notes also find their place in many households.
Use of elderflowers:
To prepare elderflower tea, brew 2-3 teaspoons of elderflower with around 150-180 ml of water. The tea infusion should then be left covered for 10 minutes, then stirred well and strained. Elderflower tea can be sweetened as desired and enjoyed both hot and cold. Elderflowers add a creative and tasty addition to many dishes and drinks.
Storage:
Elderflowers should be stored dry and ideally airtight.
