rosehip shells (ground) - rosehip powder
Rosehip shells are the fruit shells of the rose hip. These are the fruits of wild rose species, especially the dog rose. The plant belongs to the rose family and often grows in hedges, on embankments and forest edges in Europe, parts of Asia and North Africa.
The shells of the rose hip are robust and red to orange in color. Rose hips are hard and covered with small spines or hairs. The inner flesh of the rose hip is protected by the rose hip shell.
The culinary use of rosehip shells is varied. The dried rosehip shells are often made into rosehip tea in combination with hibiscus or other fruit teas. Fresh rosehips are used as a spread. Both fresh rosehips and dried rosehip shells are used to make rosehip jam and other culinary products.
In terms of taste, rosehip peels are described as slightly sour, refreshing and particularly aromatic. Rosehip peel tea has a fruity taste and can be refined with different sweeteners.
Use of rosehip peels:
To make rosehip peel tea, add a heaped teaspoon of rosehip peel to around 200 ml of cold water. Cover and allow to simmer gently for around 5 minutes. The rosehip peel tea is then strained and can be sweetened as desired.
Good to know: Rosehip tea is suitable for long-term use and can therefore be enjoyed cold even one day after cooking!
