basil (shredded)
Basil (also known as basil, basil herb or royal herb) is a spice plant from the genus Basil of the same name and belongs to the family Lamiaceae. The appearance of the plant can vary depending on the type of basil. The leaves of the basil have an intense green color and give off a unique, refreshing scent. Basil has a complex, sweet, spicy aroma with clove and anise notes. The leaf tastes mild, peppery and a little like cloves with mint and anise undertones.
Basil originally comes from Asia and has found its way into the entire culinary world. Today, basil is an integral part of many cuisines around the world and many culinary dishes and drinks.
Basil grows best in well-drained soil and sunny locations. It can be grown from seeds or seedlings. The shredded and dried form of basil allows for long and easy use.
Use of Basil
Shredded and dried basil is an enrichment for many dishes, as its uses are particularly varied. In Italian cuisine, shredded and dried basil is a key flavor. For example, basil can be used in tomato and mozzarella salad, pasta aglio e olio or in a pesto. The shredded and dried basil, olive oil, grated parmesan, roasted pine nuts and garlic are mixed together in a mortar or a blender to make a pesto. Basil brings particularly fresh flavors to the kitchen. The dried basil can be used for pizza, bruschetta and even Mediterranean pasta dishes, thus opening up a particularly wide range of culinary possibilities.
There are no limits to the use of basil. It can also be used in cold dishes, for example, as an addition to dips or herb curd. To make basil herb curd, mix curd with sour cream, lemon juice, salt, olive oil and basil.
The dried basil can be processed with salt to make basil herb salt. To make a jar of basil salt, mix about 100g of sea or mountain salt with 50g of basil. The mixture should be dried in the oven at about 60 degrees for at least two hours to remove the moisture from the salt. The basil salt should be stored in a cool, tightly sealed place and, above all, in the dark.
Overall, basil offers a wide range of variations in the kitchen and in many dishes. Basil is almost indispensable in the kitchen. Whether in salads, sauces, tomato dishes or other raw foods, basil is a faithful companion. It also refines quark, dips, pizza or white meat and fish.
